There are more paranormal investigators today than ever before. This is largely because there is not a specific set of qualifications that need to be met in order to get started. As a result, the number of amateur paranormal research investigators is on the rise. Anyone who simply has an interest in joining a group of paranormal investigators can get involved with very little initial capital investment or training.
What Are Paranormal Investigators?
There isn’t a strict definition of what paranormal activity investigators really are. As a result, many people simply refer to paranormal investigators as ghost hunters. It is common to combine paranormal investigators and ghost hunters into the same group, however there are some small, yet important, distinctions that need to be made.
There are a few general characteristics that most paranormal investigators have in common. The first is that most paranormal investigators will not accept payments directly for their services – although many accept donations to cover common expenses like travel and lodging. Paranormal investigators tend to generate most of their income through writing books, conducting workshops, and setting up local tours. Another common characteristic of paranormal investigators is that they have some form of education related to parapsychology. This could either be formal education or self-education and on-site training.
The Difference between Paranormal Investigators and a Ghost Hunters
The biggest distinction between the two groups is what paranormal investigators jobs entail. In general, a ghost hunter is exclusively focused on finding and documenting proof of ghosts or spirits. Paranormal investigators offer a much wider focus. Along with searching for proof of ghosts, paranormal investigators will investigate anything which falls under the umbrella of paranormal. Depending on the group of paranormal investigators, this can include cryptology, poltergeists, demonology, and much more. For example, there are several groups of paranormal investigators in Texas which spend very little time focusing on ghosts and more on a combination of demonology and cryptology.
There are some similarities between paranormal investigators and ghost hunters as well. The most glaring similarity is that both groups have the same goals. They want to document proof of paranormal activities – often as scientifically as possible. Paranormal investigators and ghost hunters also want to help anyone who requests their services in any way possible.
Who Are the Most Well Known Paranormal Investigators?
If you are new to the history of paranormal investigators, then you may not be familiar with some of the most well-known and influential characters. The following list primarily excludes paranormal investigators who have become popular among the masses through television shows (although many on the list have made multiple television appearances) and instead focuses on individuals who gained the highest level of respect within the tightknit community of paranormal research investigators.
Loyd Auerbach has been involved with paranormal investigators in some form since the 1980’s. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology in 1978 and released his first book (ESP, Hauntings, and Poltergeists: A Parapsychologist’s Handbook) in 1986. Since then, he has released multiple other books, most recently in 2005. Some of his career highlights related to paranormal activity investigators includes:
• Founded The Office of Paranormal Investigations (OPI) in 1989

Troy Taylor is a supernatural historian, has authored more than 80 books, and is well-known among most paranormal investigators. Many of these books relate to ghosts, crime, and hauntings in America. His first release was in 1989. He has been involved with a variety of different ventures related to tours in conjunction with other paranormal investigators. In 1996, he founded The American Ghost Society. It has become a nationwide network of psychical researchers and paranormal research investigators. The goal of this society is to document authentic evidence of the paranormal. One of the unique characteristics of this society is that it is based upon a physical network of paranormal investigators, not just a mailing list. This means that if you want to get in contact with local paranormal investigators in Texas, then you would be able to directly get into contact with them.
Troy also launched the Haunted America Conference, which is often noted as being “America’s Original Ghost Conference” for paranormal investigators. He has also founded the WhiteChapel Press, Dark Haven Entertainment, and is a principle owner of the Avon Theater.

The original goal of this group was to research the relationship between unexplained phenomena and energy fields. How to Become a Paranormal Investigator
If you are interested in getting started on your own or joining a team of paranormal investigators, there are several different options at your disposal. One of the biggest problems that most people have is that they simply don’t know where to start. Here are a few simple techniques to quickly get started.
Learn As Much As Possible About Paranormal Investigators and Paranormal Events
Before you start contacting local paranormal investigators, it is important to develop a strong foundation of knowledge. You can choose to either self-educate yourself or go through a training program. Keep in mind that there isn’t an official certificate for paranormal investigators or training program that you must go through, although they can give a very strong foundation of knowledge. Many of them will also introduce you to commonly used tools and techniques.
Contact Local Groups of Paranormal Investigators
As you are learning, you should simultaneously be contacting local groups of paranormal investigators. While you won’t normally find paranormal investigators jobs readily available, you will be able to volunteer and gain valuable experience. By working with seasoned paranormal investigators, you will significantly shorten your learning curve and get hands-on experience.
Choose Your Equipment Wisely
The next step is buying some equipment. If you are going to join a group of paranormal investigators, then you may want to wait and see what they need. By doing this, you can spend your capital on equipment that would benefit your entire group.
The number of paranormal investigators will likely continue to increase over the coming years because the barrier to entry is low and the level of interest is high. Paranormal research investigators will continually strive to bring paranormal studies into the mainstream science community. By building on the foundation that well-known paranormal investigators have created, you could be part of parapsychology as we take the next step and gain a better understanding of the world around us.
